It is specifically designed for marine radar systems and shipbuilding applications where multiple signals and power must pass through a single rugged connection point. The five pin configuration allows you to combine power and signal functions in one interface. Typical marine radar systems need power for the rotating antenna plus signal lines for radar data and control commands. Using separate connectors for each function would take up too much space on the radar mast. This 7/8 5 core connector solves that problem.
