This bronze captures one of antiquity's most joyful survivors: a replica of the Dancing Faun of Pompeii. The original 1st-century BCE statue, discovered in 1830 amidst the volcanic ruins of Pompeii's House of the Faun, embodied Roman admiration for Greek mythology. Fauns – mischievous woodland spirits – symbolized uninhibited revelry, and this figure's ecstatic pose (head thrown back, limbs caught mid-motion) epitomizes Dionysian abandon.
